The Vatican announced that Wednesday’s general audience has been cancelled.

On Monday, Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni confirmed that Pope Francis is suffering from a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection that has required his hospitalization.

“All the tests conducted so far indicate a complex clinical condition that will require appropriate hospitalization,” the Vatican statement said, indicating that Francis will remain hospitalized for several more days after being admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Friday.

Bruni clarified that this does not constitute a “worsening” but rather that the change in treatment is due to a review of test results from the past few days, providing a more comprehensive assessment of a polymicrobial infection. Therefore, there is still no set date for Pope Francis to be discharged.

For now, the Vatican has announced that Wednesday’s general audience has been canceled. Some media outlets also report that Pope Francis is unlikely to be present at the Mass for the Jubilee of Deacons.

The text reads, “Pope Francis, world in anguish. Surgeries, knee problems and worsening bronchitis.”

Bruni explained that Francis had rested well and spent a “calm” third night at Gemelli Hospital while continuing his treatment for the respiratory infection that led to his hospitalization last Friday. Despite being hospitalized, Pope Francis called the Holy Family parish, the only Catholic church in Gaza, last week.

“He called us on Friday and Saturday. His voice was a bit tired, but he was in good spirits and wanted to know how we were doing,” said a member of the Gazan parish, which Argentine priest Gabriel Romanelli leads.

Since the Israeli offensive against Gaza began in 2023, Pope Francis has called the Holy Family parish daily, where 600 people have taken refuge. Although he did not call yesterday, he had already informed them that he would rest on Sunday.
